What to expect on Sunday

So what’s all this focus on blue jeans about?

One thing that has broken my heart over the years is when I see people avoid the church and church people because they feel like they aren’t good enough. And clothing has a lot to do with this.

Here’s the deal. I love getting fancied up. Man you oughta see me in a suit and tie. I clean up well. But do you know who I like doing that for? MY WIFE! Yeah, I’ve been married for almost 17 years now, but I still like sweeping her off her feet and dressing to kill for her. It spices our relationship and keeps the fire going.

But friends, I do not feel the need to impress you with the way I dress. I’m not trying to get fancy for you. No offense, but I’d much rather do that for my main squeeze.

Church should not be a fashion show. It’s not a time to impress each other with how our stripes don’t clash with our plaid or whatever. It’s a time to come together in a spirit of friendship and authenticity. We gather for support, for encouragement. Not for critique. We need to get past the masks of religion and back to the heart of our hero, Jesus himself. I believe that if Jesus walked in the room right now he’d do so in a pair of jeans. And not the designer fancy types a good ol’ pair of Levis bought on the clearance rack. He lived a very common life; son of a carpenter, friend of sinners, salt of the earth. He didn’t impress people with his looks or his money. It was grace that got people’s attention. He had people’s backs. He supported his friends. He never stabbed anyone in the back. He didn’t gossip, he didn’t lie, and he wasn’t impressed with anyone’s outward appearance. He got to know people on the inside. And people’s lives changed in amazing ways because of his authentic love and concern for them.

I wear jeans on Sunday mornings, not because I’m lazy (I do iron them at least!). I just want to do things the way Jesus did them. I won’t always get it right, but I’m gonna give it my best shot.

I’ll see you on Sunday in a pair of jeans,

Clint
